REMAP (YORK PANEL)
Technical Help for the Disabled

The National Charity Remap (No. 1000456) comprises some 100 Panels throughout the UK. The York Panel is typical with 12 active members at the moment. We meet monthly and are guided in our work by representatives from both the York Hospital Trust and The City of York Social Services Department. We make aids for disabled clients which are not available on the commercial market. Any aid or device must conform to the Medical Devices Directive (1998) and be accepted by the professional staff allocating and overseeing our work. The work tends to be “low tech” calling for lateral thinking and ingenuity. We are perhaps best described as gadget makers. Panel members are retired craftsmen (or women) and all volunteers. Counting members freely given hours of work, it is estimated that The York Panel contributes some £20,000 annually into the local care economy. Members expenses and material costs are met with out of donations and a small grant from The City of York.
